Shimane's Tea Culture

Shimane Prefecture, a tea-consuming region, has a long history of tea ceremony culture deeply rooted in the lives of common people, particularly in the Izumo region. Matsue City, in particular, is said to have a widespread tea ceremony culture among the common people due to Matsudaira Fumai, the seventh lord of the Matsue Domain and a daimyo tea master, who mastered the tea ceremony and established the "Fumai-ryu" school. Meanwhile, the culture of "wild grass and health tea" to survive the harsh winters is also deeply rooted in this area. The custom of brewing and drinking common wild grasses such as Houttuynia cordata and Senna obtusifolia has long been a wisdom that supported the health of common people.
