Clam-shell Incense Box "Ono no Komachi"
This is a clam-shaped kogo (incense box) by Kosai, featuring "Ono no Komachi." It is a kogo depicting the elegant figure of Ono no Komachi and a waka poem on a plump clam shell. Since ancient times, clams, with their perfectly matching inner and outer shells, have been considered a symbol of good relationships and marital harmony, and are a design deeply associated with the Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival). The waka poem inscribed on it quietly tells a story of spring scenery and emotions, adding depth to the tea ceremony.
The color of the flowers
has faded in vain,
while I
have grown old in the world,
gazing at the long rains.
(Kokin Wakashū, Hyakunin Isshu No. 9)
◎ Meaning
