Lafcadio Hearn's "A Living God" Memorial T-Shirt
This T-shirt is a memorial T-shirt for Koizumi Yakumo, also known as Lafcadio Hearn, who deeply loved Japan and embraced all cultures worldwide with an "open mind," without discrimination. It has been exclusively produced and sold by Nakamura Chaho since 2009. For its creation, we received design suggestions and advice from Mr. and Mrs. Koizumi Ban, the great-grandson of Koizumi Yakumo.
◎ About "A Living God"
This is a commemorative T-shirt inspired by Lafcadio Hearn's (Koizumi Yakumo) work "A Living God," dedicated to mourning the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and expressing wishes for recovery.
■ The work that introduced "Tsunami" to the world
The word "Tsunami" appeared in "A Living God," which was included in "Gleanings in Buddha Fields," published in 1897. It tells the story of many villagers who were saved from a tsunami by the quick thinking of a village headman who led them to higher ground. This is the original story of "Inamura no Hi" (Fires of Rice Sheaves), still known today as disaster prevention educational material. The English title "GLEANINGS IN BUDDHA FIELDS" is featured on the T-shirt, imbued with wishes for recovery.
